API - The newest target for hackers

If you look back at the last couple of years, it is striking how APIs became a popular target for attackers. The reason behind that is the sensitive data they often store – personal identifiers, financial, medical and production control information, trade secrets, etc. They also mediate between different software and systems, which is why data leakage due to insufficient protection of APIs is currently third on the OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) risk list.
